Data Sources for Comparing COVID-19 Vaccinations Around the World

As previously noted the data used on these web pages comes from OWID, in particular from their github data-set repository. We use that data to compare countries in the global picture.

Missing Countries

Note that some countries are missing from OWID data, but from time to time the OWID data source is updated with additional information.

Other Data Sources

Though the vaccination and population data come from OWID, some additional data was pulled and integrated from other sources so that factors like income grouping, geographical region and land area are also incorporated:

World Bank income groups
The World Bank divides economies into four income groupings: low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high. A countries income is measured using gross national income (GNI) per capita, in U.S. dollars, converted from local currency using the World Bank Atlas method.
Note that this data is from 2020 - I need to update it with the 2021 data.
Country geographic parameters
Mohammed Le Doze's World countries data in JSON, CSV, XML and Yaml formats provides land area in km2 as well as region and sub-region for each country.

Population-corrected OWID Parameters

We use three of the OWID population-corrected parameters so that more valid comparisons can be made when graphing. Thus individual graphs are displayed from zero to one hundred percent, and numbers over 100% are cropped. These parameters are effectively percentages of the population.

Though vaccines for COVID-19 are not yet given to children, full country populations are still used in all OWID calculations. Sometimes in the media you hear about the percent of vaccinations in the 'adult' population, which can be confusing when you compare various reported percentages.

The three parameters are:

total_vaccinations_per_hundred
The total number of COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people in the total population. This number can be as high as 200% if only vaccines requiring 2 doses are used, and everyone in the population were vaccinated.
This is the only parameter that is usually reported for all countries; however it can be sporadically reported on a daily basis.
people_vaccinated_per_hundred
The total number of people who received at least one vaccine dose per 100 people in the total population
Not every country reports this number yet.
people_fully_vaccinated_per_hundred
The total number of people who received all doses prescribed by the vaccination protocol per 100 people in the total population.
Not every country reports this number yet.
